Paradox vs HireVue: Should You Let AI Interview Your Candidates?

Paradox vs HireVue compared: what each AI actually does, what pricing is published (none), and the NYC, Illinois, Colorado and EU rules to check first.

By Apoorv Tamrakar · · 6 min read

Paradox and HireVue both sell AI for early-stage hiring, but they do different jobs. Paradox's assistant, Olivia, screens for role requirements and schedules interviews, while HireVue runs video interviews, voice-based AI screening and assessments. Neither publishes pricing as of 15 October 2026, so the decision rests on fit and on the legal duties your hiring locations create.

What is the difference between Paradox and HireVue?

Paradox is a conversational assistant for candidates, and HireVue is an interview and assessment platform. Workday describes Paradox as a candidate experience agent that uses conversational AI for the job application journey, particularly in frontline industries. HireVue's homepage describes 24/7 AI screening interviews built on validated hiring science.

All product descriptions in this table are the vendors' own. Paradox's pages do not say Olivia conducts interviews: its documented roles are screening and coordination.

What does Paradox's Olivia actually do?

Olivia screens candidates against minimum role requirements, answers questions and books interviews. The Paradox screening page says Olivia fast-tracks qualified candidates to the next step and can schedule them automatically.

Paradox reports results for its own customers. Its Workday announcement says the company has powered more than 189 million AI-assisted candidate conversations, and quotes Chipotle's chief human resources officer describing time-to-hire falling from 12 days to 4. The screening page lists a 96% interview acceptance rate and 91% of candidates scheduled same-day. These are company-reported figures and have not been independently verified.

What does HireVue's AI interview do?

HireVue offers several formats. Its video page describes on-demand and live video interviews, and its homepage lists an AI Interviewer, skills tests, game-based assessments and an interview co-pilot for live calls on Zoom or Teams.

HireVue reports scale and outcome figures too, and they are not consistent. Its homepage states 70M interviews completed and 40% of the Fortune 100 as customers. A March 2026 press release says over 60% of the Fortune 100 and 80 million video interviews. Both are the company's claims, and they cannot both describe the same date.

Does HireVue analyse faces?

HireVue says it does not. Its science page states that it does not use facial analysis to evaluate candidates and that AI-scored video assessments analyse the transcript of what a candidate says, not facial expressions, body language, appearance, background or tone of voice.

The history explains why buyers ask. SHRM reported in February 2021 that HireVue removed facial analysis from its screening assessments in March 2020. That followed an FTC complaint filed by EPIC about opaque algorithms and facial recognition. An audit by O'Neil concluded the assessments worked as advertised on fairness and bias, but the audit firm said it was not a comprehensive audit of HireVue's algorithms, per SHRM.

What do AI interviews cost?

Neither vendor publishes a price. Paradox's pages offer only a demo request, and so does HireVue's homepage. Ask each vendor for the same quote on the same terms:

  1. Price per hire, per candidate, per seat or per location.
  2. One-time implementation and integration fees with your ATS.
  3. Contract length, renewal uplift and exit terms.
  4. Who pays for the annual bias audit data if you hire in New York City.

Our guide to hidden fees in HR software contracts covers how to negotiate these items.

What laws apply to AI interviews?

The duties depend on where candidates live and what the tool does. The table lists what each source says, and counsel should confirm it for your case.

LawWhat it requiresStatus
NYC Local Law 144Bias audit no more than one year before use, published summary, notice to NYC-resident candidates at least ten business days before use. Penalty up to $500 for a first violation, $500 to $1,500 for each later one, and each day of use counts separatelyDCWP enforcement began 5 July 2023
Illinois AI Video Interview ActNotice that AI will analyse the video, explanation of how it works, consent before the interview, limits on sharing, deletion within 30 days of a requestEffective 1 January 2020
Colorado SB 26-189Consumer notice, plain-language description after an adverse outcome, and a right to meaningful human review for automated decision-making in consequential decisionsSigned 14 May 2026; replaces SB 24-205; developer documentation duties start 1 January 2027
EU AI Act, Annex IIIRecruitment and selection AI, including filtering applications and evaluating candidates, is listed as high-riskAccording to artificialintelligenceact.eu, the Digital Omnibus moved the Annex III date to 2 December 2027

Under NYC's law, a tool is covered if it issues a score, classification or recommendation that substantially assists or replaces discretionary decisions. A tool that only schedules interviews may fall outside it, while one that ranks or filters candidates may fall inside it. That is a legal question, not a vendor one.

Can the vendor's AI get you sued?

Employers and vendors both face litigation risk from algorithmic screening. In Mobley v. Workday, Judge Rita Lin of the Northern District of California granted preliminary certification of a nationwide age-discrimination collective on 16 May 2025. The collective covers applicants aged 40 and over who were denied employment recommendations through Workday's platform since 24 September 2020. Workday says the claims lack merit, and certification is preliminary.

That case concerns Workday's screening tools, not Paradox or HireVue. It shows that disparate impact claims can reach tool makers and that "the vendor handles compliance" is not a safe assumption.

How will candidates react?

Many dislike it. Pew Research Center's survey of 11,004 U.S. adults in December 2022 found Americans oppose AI making final hiring decisions by 71% to 7%, and 66% said they would not want to apply to an employer using AI in hiring decisions.

The data is nearly four years old and covers all adults, not only active job seekers. Still, it argues for clear notice, a human review path and an alternative for candidates who decline. For hourly roles where speed matters, a scheduling assistant is a lower-risk place to start than a scored interview.

What's still unclear?

Several things cannot be settled from public sources.

  • Outcomes. Every performance figure for both vendors is self-reported, and HireVue's own pages give different totals for the same metric.
  • Audits. HireVue says it has annual independent audits and links audit reports. Public pages do not show what each audit covered or found, so ask for current reports.
  • Pricing. Neither vendor publishes a price, so cost comparisons are not possible without quotes.
  • Colorado. The bill summary gives 1 January 2027 for developer documentation duties but no single general effective date. Read the enacted text.
  • Illinois. The summaries cited here paraphrase the statute, and it does not define "artificial intelligence."
  • Like-for-like. A chat assistant and a video interview platform are not direct substitutes, so a head-to-head winner may be the wrong frame.

So, should you let AI interview your candidates?

Use AI for scheduling and structured screening if you can document what it evaluates, publish audits where the law requires them and keep a human in the decision. Hold off on scored interviews if you cannot answer the legal questions above for every place you hire.

A practical starting sequence:

  1. Pilot scheduling and FAQ automation first, since it makes no scoring decision.
  2. Ask each vendor for its latest bias audit, validation reports and notice templates.
  3. Map candidates by location against the table above.
  4. Offer a human alternative and log who reviewed each rejection.
  5. Re-check dates before renewal, since Colorado and EU timelines moved in 2025 and 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is Paradox or HireVue better for high-volume hiring?

Paradox positions itself on high-volume frontline hiring, with screening for minimum qualifications and instant interview scheduling, according to Workday's announcement. HireVue sells video interviews, an AI Interviewer and assessments. Both are vendor claims, and neither publishes pricing as of 15 October 2026. Compare them on a pilot with your own applicant volume rather than on marketing figures.

Does HireVue still use facial analysis?

HireVue says no. Its science page states it does not use facial analysis in its assessments and analyses the transcript of what a candidate says. SHRM reported in February 2021 that HireVue removed facial analysis from its screening assessments in March 2020. Both are the company's own account of its product.

Do I need a bias audit to use AI interviews in New York City?

If the tool meets the law's definition of an automated employment decision tool, yes. NYC Local Law 144 bars use unless the tool had a bias audit within one year, a summary of results is published, and NYC-resident candidates get notice at least ten business days before use. Ask your lawyer whether a given feature qualifies.

What does Illinois require before AI analyses a video interview?

Under the Illinois Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act, effective 1 January 2020, employers must tell applicants AI will analyse the video, explain how it works and what characteristics it uses, and get consent beforehand. Videos must be destroyed within 30 days of an applicant's request. Summaries from SHRM and Sterling describe these duties.

Is the Colorado AI Act in force?

Not in its original form. Colorado enacted SB 26-189 on 14 May 2026, which repeals and reenacts SB 24-205's provisions with new requirements for automated decision-making technology in consequential decisions. The bill summary dates developer documentation duties from 1 January 2027. Check the enacted text with counsel before relying on any date.

How do candidates feel about AI in hiring?

Pew Research Center's survey of 11,004 U.S. adults, fielded in December 2022, found Americans oppose AI making final hiring decisions by 71% to 7%. The data is nearly four years old, so treat it as a signal about trust, not a current measurement. Consider offering a human alternative and clear notice.
