Gusto vs ADP vs Paychex: What Each Payroll Tool Publishes on Cost for US Small Businesses

Gusto vs ADP vs Paychex pricing as of 12 October 2026: only Gusto's $49 + $6 per person is public. Here is what to ask ADP and Paychex before you sign.

By Apoorv Tamrakar · · 7 min read

Only one of the three vendors puts its payroll prices where you can read them. Gusto's Simple plan is listed at $49 a month plus $6 per person, according to Merchant Maverick (updated 20 May 2026). ADP says RUN pricing is custom and quoted through a conversation, and Paychex's payroll page offers a free quote instead of prices.

So no public source can honestly say which of the three costs more in total. What you can do is see where cost is most likely to hide and which questions force it into the open. This post uses figures as of 12 October 2026 and labels which are published and which are reported by third parties.

Which payroll tool costs more: Gusto, ADP or Paychex?

It depends on the quote you get, and only Gusto's rates can be checked in advance. Gusto's rates are listed by two independent reviewers, while ADP and Paychex do not publish prices on the pages we opened.

The table below shows what each vendor says and what reviewers report. "Reported" means a third party gave the figure and the vendor has not confirmed it.

Gusto prices are as of 20 May 2026 (Merchant Maverick) and 7 January 2026 (Tech.co), which agree. ADP's $79 plus $4 is as of 7 January 2026. Paychex's $39 plus $5 is reported by Tech.co (7 January 2026) and Merchant Maverick (28 May 2026).

How much does Gusto cost in 2026?

Gusto Simple is $49 a month plus $6 per person, Plus is $80 plus $12, and Premium is $180 plus $22, as of 20 May 2026 per Merchant Maverick. Tech.co reported the same three prices on 7 January 2026.

A Contractor Only plan is listed at $35 a month plus $6 per person. Merchant Maverick says Simple includes W-2s and 1099 filing, automatic tax filing and payments, and two-day direct deposit. It says Plus adds next-day direct deposit, multi-state payroll and time tracking.

Add-ons are where Gusto's bill can grow. Merchant Maverick lists a broker integration at $6 per month per person and 401(k) plans starting at $49 a month plus $8 per person. Workers' compensation and health insurance carry variable premiums. The same review says Gusto uses no contracts.

One limit on all of this: Gusto's own pricing page returned an access error when we tried to open it, so these numbers come from two reviewers, not from Gusto. Check gusto.com before budgeting.

How much does ADP RUN cost for a small business?

ADP does not publish a RUN price. Its own article says RUN needs "tailored pricing" and describes a "consultative model" in which it speaks to the business directly. The company says RUN has a tiered pricing structure based on features used.

ADP also says the number and type of workers, pay frequency, payment methods, support level and extras such as timekeeping or benefits administration all feed the quote. The RUN product page lists four packages: Essential, Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro. Each shows a "Get pricing" button, not a number.

Third parties fill the gap with estimates. Tech.co reports $79 a month plus $4 per employee for Essential "according to user reports" (as of 7 January 2026). Merchant Maverick shows ADP pricing as "Custom" and says ADP does not publish standard pricing (updated 28 May 2026). A $59 base appeared in one search result, but we could not verify it.

ADP's article also says "published payroll prices may represent only part of the total cost." That is a fair point. It is also an argument for a model where you cannot compare prices before talking to a salesperson.

How much does Paychex cost?

Paychex does not show prices on its payroll services page. The page, checked 12 October 2026, offers "Get Your Free Quote" and "Request Pricing", and lists three cards: Paychex Flex Select, Foundations and Advanced.

Reviewers disagree on both names and numbers. Tech.co and Merchant Maverick report an entry price of $39 a month plus $5 per employee. Tech.co's dedicated Paychex page (14 July 2026) says Flex Select and Flex Pro "do not have public pricing" and does not repeat the $39 figure. Treat $39 plus $5 as a reported starting point, not a Paychex price.

Tech.co also says Paychex has no free plan or free trial and describes a "lengthy manual setup process". Those are one reviewer's statements.

Where do payroll costs hide?

Costs hide in per-run fees, year-end forms, setup, add-ons and contract terms, none of which show up in a headline base fee. We could not verify dollar amounts for year-end or setup fees at ADP or Paychex.

What reviewers do say:

  • Per-run charges. Tech.co says ADP "charges businesses per payroll cycle". Merchant Maverick says payroll fees may increase with payroll frequency.
  • Add-ons. Tech.co says time and attendance or health insurance "will cost extra" at ADP. Merchant Maverick lists time and attendance, health insurance, workers' compensation and retirement plans as "Custom" at ADP.
  • Contract confusion. Merchant Maverick lists "confusion around add-on costs or contract terms" among negative user reviews of ADP. ADP's own FAQ confirms a contract follows its tailored proposal.
  • Paychex add-ons. Tech.co lists add-ons for Flex Select including garnishment payment, general ledger and state unemployment insurance services, all with custom pricing.

A figure of $49.95 plus $3.85 per employee for ADP year-end filing circulates on a payments company's blog. We did not open or verify it, so we do not rely on it. Likewise, claims of $1,500 to $2,000 early termination fees come from aggregator pages with no stated method. Ask for the real numbers in writing.

What would 10 employees cost per month?

At the reported entry rates, 10 paid employees cost between $89 and $119 a month before add-ons. That spread is small. The difference between a plan tier and an add-on matters more.

Arithmetic from the figures above (monthly, 10 paid people, no add-ons, no taxes):

PlanFormulaMonthlyAnnual
Paychex Essentials (reported)$39 + $5 x 10$89$1,068
Gusto Simple$49 + $6 x 10$109$1,308
ADP RUN Essential (user-reported)$79 + $4 x 10$119$1,428
Gusto Plus$80 + $12 x 10$200$2,400
Gusto Premium$180 + $22 x 10$400$4,800

Two things follow. First, at 10 people, the entry plans from all three sit within $30 a month of each other, so the "quiet" cost is more likely to be in tier choice and add-ons than the base fee. Second, per-person fees scale differently: at 40 employees the reported ADP rate ($79 + $4 x 40 = $239) is below Gusto Simple ($49 + $6 x 40 = $289) and Paychex Essentials ($39 + $5 x 40 = $239). Those are arithmetic on unconfirmed figures, so use them to shape questions, not to decide.

ADP says customers save on average $1,500 a year on payroll and HR admin costs after switching to ADP. That is the company's claim, and the article gives no method.

What should you ask before you sign?

Ask for every fee in writing before you sign. Merchant Maverick recommends confirming the base fee, per-employee fees, payroll-run fees, year-end form fees, setup fees, contract terms, discounts and add-on costs.

A short checklist you can paste into an email to any provider:

  1. What is the monthly base fee and the per-employee fee at my headcount?
  2. Is there a per-payroll-run fee, and does it change if I pay weekly?
  3. Are W-2 and 1099 forms included, or charged per form?
  4. What setup or implementation fees apply?
  5. How long is the contract, and what does cancellation cost?
  6. What is the price after any free-trial period, such as ADP's 3 months free offer?
  7. Which of time tracking, benefits administration and workers' compensation are add-ons?

If a provider will not answer in writing, that tells you something.

What's still unclear?

Several things could not be established from public sources, and the argument has a real weak point.

  • Total cost ranking. Without ADP and Paychex quotes, no one can rank the three on total cost. The title's premise, that one of them "quietly" costs more, is unproven here.
  • Gusto's current prices. Gusto's pricing page and comparison pages were not accessible, so Gusto figures rest on two reviewers. Some other aggregators list different Gusto numbers.
  • ADP's real entry price. Reports range from $59 to $79 for the base. ADP has not confirmed either.
  • Paychex's plan names and price. Reviewers use Essentials, Select and Pro, while Paychex's page shows Select, Foundations and Advanced. The $39 plus $5 entry price is not on Paychex's own page.
  • Year-end, setup and cancellation fees at ADP and Paychex: no verified dollar amounts.
  • Quote-based pricing is not wrong. ADP argues that flexible platforms need tailored pricing, and customers may get a better rate through negotiation. The cost is that you cannot compare before you talk to sales.

This article is based on public pages and reviews. We did not run payroll on any of these platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gusto cheaper than ADP and Paychex?

On published sticker prices, Gusto Simple at $49 a month plus $6 per person (as of May 2026) is not the cheapest figure reported for these three. Paychex Essentials is reported at $39 plus $5, but Paychex does not show that price on its own site. ADP publishes no price. Total cost depends on add-ons and the quotes you receive, so compare written quotes.

Does ADP publish RUN pricing?

No. ADP says RUN pricing is custom and quoted through a conversation, and its four packages (Essential, Enhanced, Complete, HR Pro) show 'Get pricing' buttons instead of prices on the product page checked on 12 October 2026. Reviewers have reported $79 a month plus $4 per employee for Essential, but that is user-reported.

Does Paychex publish its prices?

Not on its payroll services page as checked on 12 October 2026. The page offers 'Get Your Free Quote' and 'Request Pricing'. Some reviewers report an entry price of $39 a month plus $5 per employee, while Tech.co's dedicated Paychex page says Flex Select and Flex Pro have no public pricing.

Does Gusto charge extra for W-2 and 1099 filing?

According to Merchant Maverick (updated 20 May 2026), Gusto's Simple plan includes W-2s and 1099 filing, along with automatic tax filing and payments. The same review says Gusto uses no contracts. Gusto's own pricing page could not be opened for this article, so confirm on gusto.com.

What should I ask before signing with a payroll provider?

Ask for the base fee, per-employee fee, per-payroll-run fee, year-end form fees, setup fees, contract length, cancellation terms, discounts and add-on costs in writing. Merchant Maverick recommends confirming exactly this list with ADP, and the same list works for any quote-based provider.

Is the ADP three months free offer a real saving?

ADP advertises 3 months of free payroll for new small business sign-ups, with terms linked on its product page. The saving depends on the terms and on what the price becomes in month four. Ask for the post-trial price and any contract length in the written proposal.
