Indeed Sponsored Jobs: Are You Paying for Clicks That Never Apply?

Indeed Sponsored Jobs bill on clicks, with third-party CPC estimates of $0.10 to $5+. Here is how to check what you pay per real application.

Yes, you can pay for clicks that never turn into applications. Indeed Sponsored Jobs are billed on engagement, and Manatal says clicks "do not guarantee qualified candidates or completed applications." As of 2026, third-party guides put the cost per click between about $0.10 and $5 or more, so the number that matters is your cost per completed application, not your cost per click.

This guide covers how the billing works, what clicks cost, and how to measure what you actually pay for each applicant. Figures come from tool vendors and support pages rather than Indeed's rate cards; where they disagree, we say so.

How does Indeed charge for Sponsored Jobs?

Indeed charges for engagement with the listing, not for a hire. CareerPlug says Indeed "charges employers when a unique job seeker interacts with one of their job postings," and that depending on budget type and market you pay per click (PPC) or per application (PPA).

Manatal describes the same split as pay per click or pay per started application (PPSA), where you pay only when a candidate submits an application that meets your required screening criteria. Truffle ties the click type to the budget type:

Budget typeWhat triggers a charge (per Truffle, June 2026)
Daily budgetSomeone clicks to view your job
Monthly budgetSomeone clicks through to apply

This matters for the question in the title. On a daily budget, a viewer who reads the listing and leaves still costs you money.

Did Indeed stop pay-per-application?

Two guides say yes, and two current guides still describe it as an option. Truffle and Pin both say Indeed retired its pay-per-application model on 18 December 2023. Truffle adds that this followed billing complaints.

CareerPlug and Manatal still describe PPA or PPSA as options depending on market and budget type. The practical reading: your account may be on either model, and the dashboard is the only reliable answer for your market.

How much does a click cost?

As of 2026, published estimates run from roughly $0.10 to $5 or more per click, and none of them come from Indeed. CareerPlug says only that cost per click "is determined by the budget, the location of the job, and competition on Indeed."

SourceDateEstimated CPC
VendrLast updated February 2026$0.25 to $5.00+ overall; $0.50 to $3.00 for most roles
Truffle15 June 2026About $0.10 to $5; average roles $1 to $3
Pin2 June 2026$0.10 to $0.50 low competition; $0.97 to $2.71 average; $3.00 to $5.00+ competitive

Pin also says metro CPC can run up to 300% higher than in rural markets, and that January adds a 15 to 20% premium. Treat these as directional. They are vendor estimates, and the sources do not agree on the low end.

What is the minimum budget?

The sources disagree, so check your own dashboard. Truffle says the minimum is $5 a day and that as of July 2025 Indeed enforces a $25 a day minimum per sponsored posting. Pin says you can set between $5 and $499 a day, with a $25 minimum budget per job posting.

Manatal says you can set an initial daily sponsored budget as low as $5, and Vendr says there is no monthly minimum. If you run 10 open roles at a $25 floor, that is a very different monthly commitment than at $5.

Billing timing is clearer. CareerPlug says Indeed sends an invoice "on the first day of the month or when sponsorship charges meet or exceed $500, whichever comes first." Several roles at once can hit that threshold mid-month.

Why do clicks not turn into applications?

Because sponsoring buys visibility, not fit. Truffle says sponsoring "does nothing to qualify" applicants and that "budget gets consumed whether or not applications convert." Truffle sells AI screening software, so it has a reason to say so, but the billing mechanics support the point.

Common causes to check:

  • Duplicate posts. CareerPlug warns that if a job is active in your Indeed account and you also post or sponsor it through your ATS, Indeed "will flag your posts as duplicates and suppress visibility for your jobs entirely."
  • A long or confusing apply flow. Clicks arrive, completions do not.
  • A title or pay mismatch. The click is cheap, the candidate is wrong.
  • Competitive markets. Pin's higher CPC bands apply to competitive roles, so each wasted click costs more.

How do you measure what you are really paying?

Track three numbers per job each week: spend, clicks and completed applications. CareerPlug's dashboard definitions are a good base: Sponsorship Clicks are the number of times your sponsored ad is clicked, Sponsorship Applies are applications submitted, and Average Cost Per Apply is "the total cost of your sponsorship divided by the number of sponsored applies."

Manatal suggests a stricter version: cost per application equals total Indeed spend divided by qualified applications. An illustrative example with made-up numbers: $200 of spend, 100 clicks and 8 applications gives a $2.00 CPC but a $25 cost per application. If only 3 of those 8 pass your screening questions, it is about $67 per qualified applicant.

Indeed's own estimator is a starting point only. CareerPlug notes the estimates are "not a guarantee of future performance."

How can you cut wasted spend?

Start with the controls you own. None of these is a guaranteed fix, and each should be tested against your own cost per application.

  1. Remove duplicates between your ATS feed and your direct Indeed listing before you sponsor anything.
  2. Add screening questions if your account supports pay per started application, since Manatal says PPSA charges only when the applicant meets your screening criteria.
  3. Start at a low daily budget and raise it only for roles that convert.
  4. Pause roles where cost per application keeps climbing.
  5. Use the free allowance first. Manatal says employers can post up to three free jobs a month. Pin and Truffle say staffing agencies are generally not eligible for free posts.

What's still unclear?

Several things you would want to know are not settled by the published sources:

  • Whether low-quality or invalid clicks are credited. The billing guides from CareerPlug and Manatal do not describe a credit process. Ask your Indeed representative in writing.
  • Which pricing model applies to you. Sources conflict on whether pay per application was retired, and on the daily minimum ($5 or $25).
  • A reliable benchmark click-to-apply rate. The sources give formulas, not industry rates, so your own history is the only baseline.
  • Source independence. Truffle, Pin and Manatal sell recruiting software, and Pin's and Truffle's figures may share upstream sources. The CPC ranges are estimates, not Indeed rate cards.

The weakest part of this argument is that high click-to-apply loss is not proof of overspending. A cheap click that yields one great hire can still beat an expensive one with many weak applications. Judge each role on cost per qualified applicant and, ultimately, cost per hire.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay Indeed when someone clicks but does not apply?

Often yes. Truffle says that on a daily budget Indeed charges when someone clicks to view your job, while on a monthly budget it charges when someone clicks through to apply. Manatal says some markets use pay per started application instead. Check which model your account uses in the employer dashboard before you set a budget.

What does a click cost on Indeed Sponsored Jobs?

There is no single published rate. As of 2026, Vendr puts typical cost per click at $0.25 to $5.00+, and Truffle at about $0.10 to $5. Pin's estimates range from $0.10 to $0.50 for low-competition roles to $3.00 to $5.00+ for competitive ones. Location, budget and competition drive the price.

How do I calculate my real cost per applicant?

Divide total sponsored spend by completed applications. CareerPlug defines Average Cost Per Apply as the total cost of the sponsorship divided by the number of sponsored applies. For a stricter view, divide spend by applicants who pass your screening questions, as Manatal suggests.

Can I sponsor the same job through my ATS and Indeed directly?

Be careful. CareerPlug warns that if a job is active in your Indeed employer account and you also post or sponsor it through your ATS, Indeed will flag the posts as duplicates and suppress visibility for your jobs entirely. Pause the direct listing first.

Is Indeed's budget estimate a guarantee?

No. CareerPlug notes that Indeed's performance estimates are not a guarantee of future performance. Treat the estimate as a starting point, then track clicks, applications and cost per application weekly and adjust the budget.
